Our Mission

The mission of A Leg To Stand On (ALTSO) is to offer children who have lost their limbs in traumatic accidents or suffer from congenital limb disabilities the physical capabilities to access the opportunities and self-esteem earned through education, work, and mobility.

Who We Are

We are a NYC-based non-profit organization providing free orthopedic care – prosthetic limbs, orthotic devices, and appropriately fitted wheelchairs, to children living with limb disabilities whose families cannot afford treatment. Our goal is to provide high-quality continuous care through the age of 21, for all patients - we call them CoolKids - treated under our programs. In 2018, we increased the age of CoolKids served to 21 in honor of Bhupendra. As our CoolKids grow they require on average one to two adjustments per year to their devices. Bhupenda, who received his first prosthetic limb in 2006 at the age of eight, is now 21 and has received more than 24 prostheses from our programs. When a CoolKid like Bhupendra, who was not able to walk to school and receive an education, grows up to graduate from university with a degree in chemistry and hope for the future - that's Growing Up ALTSO. Since 2003, we've provided free care to more than 18,500 children in need. We're changing the face of disability in the developing world - join us!
