Our Mission

The mission of AFAR is to reduce animal cruelty and increase responsible companion animal care, as well as to operate an animal sanctuary and reserve where unwanted or mistreated animals can be cared for and rehabilitated for life.

Who We Are

Founded in 1996 in New York City, the American Foundation for Animal Rescue Inc., a nonprofit 501C(3) organization, and its Queens Community Animal Shelter, sometimes working with ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement, rescued over 600 dogs and cats from inhumane hoarders or responsible companion animal owners who could no longer care for them. Today, AFAR operates the 15-acre lakeside Dream Pond Animal Sanctuary and Reserve in Crescent City Florida, a home for many animal species including dogs, cats, birds, horses, a miniature donkey, pigmy goats and llamas. Our CEO currently sits on the Putnam County Animal Services Advisory Committee. AFAR fights to reduce animal cruelty and increase responsible companion animal care.
