Save Crystal River (SCR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit group of concerned citizens who have donated thousands of hours to successfully clean and restore Kings Bay, Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. Kings Bay was once a beautiful spring-fed system designated as an Outstanding Florida Waterway. However, like so many of Florida’s waterways, it suffered from an invasion of Hydrilla and other exotic and invasive species. In 1993, what became known as the storm of the century, caused a huge saltwater surge that killed these plants. This dead plant material accumulated on the bottom of the waterways where it quickly became an anoxic muck created by decomposition. This allowed Lyngbya, a cyanobacterium that thrives in low oxygen conditions, to proliferate and cause new problems for Kings Bay. This detrital material is several feet thick in some areas and has caused these canals to become inhospitable to plant and animal life. Our organization has seen tremendous success since its beginning in 2015. We have restored over 52 acres of waterways, removed over 175 million pounds of muck, and have replanted over 213,000 native plants that are now tens of millions of thriving plants.
