Our Mission
Empowering the most vulnerable women and children in Ethiopia through education.
Who We Are
Shamida is not “just” a children’s home. We do more than just home orphan and vulnerable children at Shamida.
We empower mothers mostly single.
We have a sponsorship program where we pay for children to go to school, or pay their family what they would otherwise earn in a month so that they can free their child up from the role of money-earner – and the kid can then go to school.
We aren’t in the habit of giving hand-outs (but rather a hand-up), we passionately provide vulnerable people with education and support them to grow.
At Shamida we believe that education is the key:
• The key to ending poverty.
• The key to helping people out of situations that would otherwise mean a mother would have to abandon her child,
• The key that intervenes when a family is thinking to send their 5 year out into the world to be a shepherd, instead of sending the child down the road to school.
Education does not always mean a formal education:
• We educate women in making baskets, sewing, cooking or even sheep rearing.
• We train them, we show them how to budget and then we equip them with the necessary tools to start their businesses and then we continue to help and support them.
