St. Croix Animal Welfare Center

SCAWC is an open access animal shelter and low cost Veterinary Clinic providing comprehensive services to over 2,500 sick, abused, abandoned and homeless animals a year on the island of St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. There is no government run animal control on St. Croix, and as our community’s only open access shelter we never turn any animal away. When there is an animal or citizen in need, we are there. Our program services include rescuing, rehabilitating, and homing abandoned, neglected, abused, and stray animals; reuniting lost animals with their owners; responding to compassion calls from the community to serve injured or distressed animals; facilitating humane education with youth; fighting overpopulation through low-cost, high volume spay and neuter surgeries; and addressing the feral cat issue through a trap/neuter/vaccinate/release initiative. Additionally, we provide for the wellness of owned pets through our low-cost community clinic where we provide affordable veterinary care so that families who love their pets can keep them, regardless of their financial circumstance. St. Croix Animal Welfare Center is also a key partner to the Animal Cruelty Task Force where we are working in collaboration with partner agencies to help rewrite animal cruelty and animal control laws that govern the territory. SCAWC is leading the way on affecting social change to promote the humane treatment of animals; tackle overpopulation; uproot animal abuse, abandonment, and neglect; and foster the human-animal bond. While we are working towards social change to address the root causes of systemic issues facing the animals of St. Croix, we also focus on providing direct services to serve the animals and people of St. Croix.
