Our Mission

The Women’s Justice Initiative (WJI) improves the lives of indigenous Guatemalan women and girls through education, access to legal services, and gender-based violence prevention.

Who We Are

WJI works with Maya women in rural, indigenous communities in the Western Highlands of Guatemala to increase access to justice, prevent and respond to cases of violence against women and girls (VAWG), and eradicate child marriage. WJI has a women-led team, nearly all of whom are Maya-Kaqchikel and from the communities WJI serves, with a profound understanding of the local cultural context. WJI offers 100% of its services in the local language, Kaqchikel. Currently, WJI works in 56 communities across five municipalities: Patzún, Tecpán, San Juan Comalapa, San José Poaquil, and San Martín Jilotepeque.
