Like many origin stories, WonderSeed’s has deeply personal notes. The genesis of our bold endeavor can be traced to a single mom whose son endured a traumatic event that led him to self-medicate with marijuana to escape the gnawing pain. She helplessly watched her only son descend into a state of psychosis induced by a highly concentrated version of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, a potent cannabinoid). With little societal support, and with her only son wasting away in an alternate mental reality, Nina turned to neuroscience. After poring through the latest research, she discovered that there is a direct correlation between the emotional dysregulation caused by adverse life experiences and lifelong impairments like substance abuse, criminal behavior, and even the inability to retain a job. Now armed with decades of evidence-based studies that prove the power and impact of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), Nina assembled a team of technological experts, psychologists, and education practitioners to create a novel and innovative trauma-informed SEL platform, enabling children to reflect on and regulate their behavior while also helping them to hone their critical-thinking skills. In so doing, her team hopes to steer our nation’s traumatized youth away from the perils of incarceration, recidivism, and drug and alcohol abuse.
